Back pain that keeps coming back

It hurts, you get a massage, it's fine for three days, then you start over. The massage didn't fail — you treated the effect.

Back pain returns because, most of the time, the muscle that hurts isn't the source of the problem — it's the part compensating for an imbalance somewhere else, most often in the pelvis or in daily posture. If you relax the muscle without correcting the imbalance, it tightens again within days, because it still has the same job to do.

How it actually sets in

Nobody wakes up one morning with back pain "out of nowhere". The path is almost always the same, it just stretches over years:

  1. A small imbalance appears. You sit on the same hip at your desk. You carry a bag on the same shoulder. You sprained an ankle six years ago and started walking slightly differently after.
  2. The body compensates. The pelvis tilts a little, the spine curves to keep you upright, the muscles on one side start working harder than the other.
  3. Compensation becomes normal. You feel nothing. The overworked muscles adapt.
  4. The balance breaks. One badly slept night, a weekend moving furniture, a stressful stretch — and the part carrying the load gives way.

What you feel at step 4 is the tip. What needs correcting is step 1.

Three common patterns

The lower back that locks in the morning

Getting out of bed is hard, the first steps are stiff, then it "loosens up" and improves. Usually this belongs to the pelvis and the deep hip muscles, not to the lower back itself.

The neck and the area between the shoulder blades

Common in people who sit at a desk or drive a lot. The shoulders roll forward, the head follows, and the muscles behind the neck spend all day holding the head in place. A massage there helps immediately — which is exactly why you go back for another.

Pain that runs down the leg

When the pain doesn't stay in the back but travels into the buttock and down the leg, it's a different conversation. See the guide on sciatica and a locked pelvis.

Signs that mean a doctor, not a therapist. Pain after a fall or accident; pain with fever; weakness in a leg or a feeling that it "gives way"; numbness in the saddle area or problems controlling your bladder; pain that wakes you at night and doesn't change with position; unexplained weight loss. Any of these means a medical consultation first. Manual therapy comes after, if the doctor says it can.

What helps long-term

  • Correcting the imbalance, not just relaxing the muscle. That's where Yumeiho works: resetting the pelvis and aligning the spine.
  • Regular movement, even a little. A back that doesn't move at all stiffens faster than one under moderate load.
  • Changing position every 45–60 minutes if you sit at a desk. How good the chair is matters less than how long you stay still in it.
  • A mattress that holds you, rather than one that swallows you.
  • Patience. An imbalance built over seven years doesn't resolve in one session.

What helps little or not at all

Anti-inflammatories taken for months — they hide the signal without changing the cause. Lumbar belts worn permanently — they weaken the muscles that should be doing the job. Total rest beyond two or three days — it slows recovery rather than speeding it. And "it's normal at your age" — chronic pain isn't an age, it's information.

Frequently asked questions

Because the massage relaxed the muscle but didn't change the imbalance forcing it to work extra. The muscle tightens again because it still has the same job.

It can help where the pain comes from a postural imbalance or a misaligned pelvis, because that's exactly what it works on. It isn't medical treatment and doesn't replace a consultation.

Usually 4 to 8 sessions, one or two weeks apart. After the first session it's clearer what's actually needed.

Only after a medical consultation and only if your doctor confirms it's safe. Not during an acute phase. Say the diagnosis before booking.
